operated by Paul "Longshot" Johnson.
Paul Johnson has been involved in the automotive
field since before High school, having infiltrated the work force
by fibbing about his age. At 15 years old Paul began his
career at the local gas station, pumping gas and doing odd repairs.
Paul remembers going in early on a Saturday
morning, changing oil, pumping gas, and washing cars till mid
afternoon. After a lull in the action and servicing several "U"
Haul trucks, Paul continued his duties till 2 PM (Sunday
morning) when the business closed. A three Mile walk home was a
pleasure after the long hours of the day.
Paul has owned and operated several automotive related businesses in the past 35
years (1972 to date), including several gas stations and a Shell
Food Mart with gasoline, an automotive repair garage and also a
Speed Shop in the Worcester Massachusetts area from 1991 to
1999.
In 1984 Paul was
certified by the state of Massachusetts as a Vocational education
instructor in the automotive technologies. Paul taught at Worcester
Vocational Technical High School, Blackstone Valley Vocational High
School and Joseph P. Keefe Technical High School.
Paul began his
Drag Racing activities at Lebanon Valley Drag way in the summer of
1969, Running a 1969 Mustang in L/SA, After winning a Ford
invitational event at New England Drag Way in august. After winning
ten straight victories at Lebanon Valley in 1969, He was hooked
forever!
In 1974, Paul
purchased the old Country Girl Funny Car from Carl Revese in
Waltham Massachusetts. He became licensed at New England Drag way
in his Funny Car that year. Paul ran the car for Two years in the
Pro Comp Category of Drag Racing at local tracks, (Lebanon Valley,
Connecticut Drag Way and New England Drag Way, His home track at
this point).
Since then Paul
has been actively involved in drag racing, having won the 20th
annual Grand Nationals in TAFC (NHRA) and beating the then world
champion Bob Newbury in the finals. Paul has crewed on several Top
alcohol Funny cars and Grant Flowers "Voodooist" Top Fuel Dragster.
(Number 4 in points with IHRA in 2003). Paul has a great
understanding of Mechanics and is very flexible in his
capabilities. From conventional normally aspirated Engines to all
out Drag Race Supercharged Monsters.
Today Paul
Johnson, originally from Massachusetts, is the proud owner Custom
Classics and Performance in Schaghticoke New York. Established in
2004 after a year of traveling with his wife Sandra.
His claim to fame
has more to do with his perseverance and commitment to the
automotive technologies and love for Classic Machinery and the
sport of Drag Racing*
